I'll quote his second count further down. Here, my error was in choosing the term "partial commitment," which was too easily mistaken for "part-time commitment." When I make a part-time commitment, it's always a full commitment for what I've promised to do, as are all my commitments. What I mean by a partial commitment is that I don't initially agree to do every job a client asks me to do. So, instead, I make a full commitment to part of the job offered. Here's an example:

Monica was an expert in testing. Company X wanted her to act as test manager for a troubled project, from start to finish. But she knew that Company X had a habit of cutting the testing at the end of projects in order to save their schedules—and then blaming their test managers for the poor quality they delivered.

Monica offered them a partial commitment. She would fully commit to lead their test planning, and also to participate in their project planning. She would also commit to assist them in their search for a permanent test manager. If they failed to hire one in time, she would negotiate further commitment—based on how they were managing the project so far.
